Bright Sheng: Tibetan Dance
Tibetan Dance was composed in October 200 for the Verdehr Trio of the Michigan State University. Scored for Clarinet, Violin, and Piano, it calls upon the musicians to also use their instruments as percussion, with the violinist sometimes tapping the soundboard to create a drum-like rhythm. Written as three movements: Prelude – Song – Dance , it weaves together themes from China, Japan, and the composer’s native Tibet, creating a mesmerising cross-cultural counterpoint. Bright Sheng is a contemporary Chinese composer, who settled and studied in America following the Cultural Revolution. He is known for writing traditional Chinese tunes and folk songs in a western style.
