By 1820, when this work was composed, Beethoven’s output, perhaps due to his deafness, had declined considerably. The only complete works from the period of 1820-23 were the last three Piano sonatas, the Missa Solemnis and the Ninth Symphony . Even when compared to these magnificent works, the Sonata In E from Opus 109 maintains its significance and status of a true masterpiece.
