Leitz Weingut Rüdesheimer Kirchenpfad Kabinett Feinherb 2018

With 20 2016 wines scoring 90–97 points, and the IWC Trophy for Riesling four years in a row, Leitz is certainly one of Germany’s finest producers. The last two vintages of this wine were awarded 91 Suckling points. A brilliant, lime fresh Riesling. The German Wine Guide notes “few in the Rheingau make finer wine than Leitz”, confirmed by the Riesling Trophy at 2017’s IWC competition. The Leitz estate is in Rüdesheim, at the western end of the Rheingau, and is run today by Johannes Leitz, who took over the family property in 1985, aged just 21, after his father’s premature death. He increased the vineyards from 2.9 hectares to 40 and raised the estate’s profile to its current Trophy winning status. Rüdesheim is the region that “established Germany’s reputation for world class white wines” (Hugh Johnson) and the Kirchenpfad Kabinett is a wonderful example. Fermented with ‘wild yeasts’, the wine is left on its lees to lend a creamy roundness to the citrus and mineral freshness.
