He first became famous with his children's books about Nijntje, now better known as Miffy, which he created in 1955. Inspired by Matisse, Picasso and Braque, Dick Bruna's characters are minimal but still full of life and details. He once said: "What matters to me is reducing everything to its essence so that no line is redundant. That is the strength of simplicity: The art of omission".
